This new one-story home, located in Del Mar, California, is only blocks from the beach. Since this tight lot has no real views to take advantage of, getting light into the living space was a paramount concern. Continuous, operable clerestory windows provide much-needed daylight and air. Being located in the floodplain requires the habitable portion of the structure to be elevated seven feet above existing grade.
The design is a modern reflection of traditional Southern California vernacular. The exposed rafters of the split gable remind us of the homes we grew up in, contemporary yet familiar.
Even though it is a relatively small home on a tight lot, there will be comfortable sleeping space for as many as six guests. Four outdoor patios - two in front and two in the rear - give multiple options for guests to have private outdoor time.
